DCR Surgery

Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is an Oculoplasty procedure carried out for the treatment of epiphora, i.e., tearing because of blocking in the nasolacrimal duct. Our tears originate from the lacrimal gland, which is located at the outer upper side of our eye. With each block of the eye, the tears are directed into the openings in our eyelids known as “Puncta.” Puncta is a point through which tears travel in a path known as the canalicular system in the lacrimal sac. This lacrimal sac is in between the eye and the nose and channels tears into the nasal cavity by the nasolacrimal duct. This is a long path and blockage can be caused because of excess tearing. Obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct is a common issue and is treated by creating an opening from the lacrimal sac in the nasal cavity. This procedure is called as Dacryocystorhinostomy or DCR surgery.

DCR surgery is a relatively simple procedure. The overall success rates exceed 90%. However, in critical cases, the possibility of success may be lower. The risks and side effects of the DCR surgery are relatively small, and can potentially lead to a long-lasting relief of bothersome tearing. DCR surgery offers an excellent option for patients with troublesome tearing due to blockage in the nasolacrimal duct.
